Cutting Through The Confusion Which The Media Stirs

Make Sure You Know The Difference

Findings of a study which states, "Breast cancer rates fell as women turned away from hormone replacement therapy", was recently published online in Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

This is why it is so important to keep in contact with your customers on a regular basis, to help them decipher the confusion of news media bites that hit the air waves.

The article cited that use of HRT to combat the effects of menopause halved in Britain after studies suggested it could increase the risk of breast cancer. Another study conducted in Canada has now found that as use of the treatment dropped, the number of cases of breast cancer detected also reduced.

However after several years, breast cancer rates began to rise again leading researchers to believe that not using HRT simply led to their tumors growing more slowly.

A few thoughts on these matters.

When they say HRT, what type of HRT? What hormones are involved. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, etc. And where estrogen is implicated much of the time, which estrogen?

Were they bio-identicals, such as estriol, estradiol, and estrone? and at what concentrations, strength's, and were the patients being adequately tested?

Or were they non-bioidentical's, such as the conjugated horse estrogen's such as premarin(R), combined with the non progesterone, progestin medroxyprogesterone, both which were implicated in the US Government sponsored, Women's Health Initiative Study.

Estrogen is often the culprit, and there are estrogen dependent cancers. Although it is interesting to note that estriol has been used in some breast cancer treatments by believably acting as an 'estrogen blocker' of other more powerful and proliferative estrogen's such as estradiol, estrone, and possible environmental estrogen's, aka xeno-estrogens.

I believe it is all about balance. Benefits of properly balanced, bio-identical hormones have been published in numerous studies. We should take into account each person as an individual, their lifestyle and dietary status, how their body metabolizes the hormones, environmental assaults and of course proper management.

Food for thought - just an important point to show how the media constantly builds obstacles for the lay public from finding the truth.

Here is probably my favorite book on hormones, easy to read, reference and understand by Dr. Pamela Smith...for patients and practitioner's

Let Your Senator's Know This Is Not Ok

Here’s one that falls under the category of ‘truth is stranger than fiction.’ Sometimes the actions that Big Pharma, the F*D*A* and other governing boards take against the natural health and natural supplement industry can make a perfect movie script, much like Harrison Ford’s movie, The Fugitive. I have to say this one is reaching and don’t think it would even make the considertion of a down and out movie producer, clammoring to get anything on the screen.

As report on Life Extension website http://www.lef.org, the Senate is debating a bill that will enable the F*D*A to put vitamin supplement makers in jail for ten years if they cite findings from peer reviewed published scientific studies on the label of their dietary supplements or their website.

Kind of like, your damed if you do and your damed if you don’t. It seems that this is all falling under the Food Safety Accountability Act, which is designed to punish anyone who knowingly contaminates food for sale.

So this bill is about adulteration, but they are making the line even thinner between adulteration and misbranding…the term that has been used to punish nutrient manufacturers when making claims about their products.

As LEF article mentions, the belief is that the F*D*A will use this as a hammer to threaten and coerce small companies into signing crippling consent decrees that will deny consumer’s access to truthful non-misleading information about natural approaches to protect against age-related disease.

Information is a powerful thing, ane when your governing body decides to take action to prevent easy access…you really have to be concerned.

Please tell your two Senators to OPPOSE the Food Safety Accountability Act (S. 3767). You can do this in a few minutes on LEF convenient Legislative Action Center on their Web site at www.LEF.org

If you’d like to read the legal details about this bill, log on to the Alliance for Natural Health Web site.

B Vitamins - Potential To Fight Alzheimer's Disease

Scientists at the University of Oxford conducted a trial on 168 people and found that high doses of three B Vitamin Supplements every day reduced brain shrinkage associated with dementia by as much as 53 percent.
Brain shrinkage, or atrophy, is a natural part of ageing although it is accelerated in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) which is a kind of memory loss and forgetfulness, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The brain naturally begins to shrink as we age and by the age of 60, by as much as ½ percent every year.
In cases of MCI, brain shrinkage accelerates to 1 percent a year and in Alzheimer’s disease, 2 ½ percent each year. Both accompanied by accelerated memory problems, slower thoughts and confusion.

A Unique Connection

The researchers set out in a new direction in this study, knowing that a people with higher levels of homocysteine, an amino acid found in the blood, is associated with accelerated brain shrinking as well as an accurate marker for heart disease.
And knowing that higher than RDA doses of Vitamins B6, B12 and Folic acid can be very effective in lowering homocysteine levels, they conducted their study around this possibly simple and cheap solution.

Over a two year period, half of the participants were given a daily tablet containing high doses of Vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid. The other half received placebos.

At the end of the trial, the effects of the vitamin supplemented group showed dramatic results; brain atrophy was slowed on average by 30 percent and in many cases as high as 53 percent.

Professor David Smith, a pharmacologist who co-authored the study, said the results were “immensely promising”, and “It’s a very simple solution: you give someone some vitamins and you protect the brain.”

A Great Story - Something To Think About When You Feel You Should Speak Up, But Dont...Hail to the Wise Fools

Nasrudin and The Egg

One morning, Nasrudin,

The great Sufi mystic* who always pretended to be mad,

Wrapped an egg in a cloth, went into the town’s main square, and called the people who were there.

Today there will be an important contest! - he said

Whoever discovers what is inside this cloth, will be given the egg inside it!

The people exchanged glances, intrigued, and answered:

How can we know? No one is capable of divination!

Nasrudin insisted:

That which is inside this cloth has a yellow center like a yolk, surrounded by a clear liquid like egg white,

Which in turn is contained inside a shell which breaks very easily.

It is a symbol of fertility, and reminds us of birds flying to their nests.

So, who can tell me what is hidden here?

All the folk thought Nasrudin was holding an egg, but the answer was so obvious,

No one wanted to embarrass themselves in front of everyone else.

What if it wasn’t an egg, but something more important, a product of the fertile Sufi mystic’s imagination?

A yellow center might suggest the sun, the surrounding liquid could be an alchemist’s concoction.

No, the madman was definitely trying to make someone look a fool.

Nasrudin asked twice more, and no one dared say something foolish.

So he unwrapped the cloth and showed everyone the egg.

You all knew the answer - he said

And no one dared put it into words.

“Such are the lives of those who haven’t the courage to risk:

Solutions are generously provided by God, but

People always seek complicated explanations, and end up doing nothing.”

*Nasrudin was the archetypal 'wise fool', who lived in the Middle East over 600 years ago.

Disover The Hidden Risk In Prescription Medications For The Gluten Sensitive

Did you know there could be un-disclosed ingredients in prescription medications which can adversely affect patients with Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivities? Gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley and rye can often be used as an excipient ingredient which does not require such listing, leading to symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation and more to the unsuspecting consumer.
Gluten sensitivity is a major problem in people with celiac disease, and the main treatment for people with Celiac Disease is to follow a strict gluten-free diet for life. The Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act of 2004 requires packaged food labels, vitamins and nutrients to identify all ingredients containing wheat and other common allergens. This was a major land mark for people with Celiac disease, although the problem still exists that no such laws have been enacted to alert pharmacists or patients when gluten is might be present in their medication.
Celiac Disease is triggered by consumption of the protein called gluten which is found in wheat, barley and rye. Common symptoms someone with Celiac or another form of gluten intolerance will notice are; bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, rashes, headaches, joint pain, depression, osteoporosis and more.
So the question you might be asking is, “what would a wheat protein be doing in medications?”
Medications consist of active ingredients, the actual component which is targeted at their symptoms, and what are known as inactive ingredients or excipients which are often binders to hold the medication together or fillers to basically take up space in a capsule. Where there are a few active ingredients which might contain gluten, it is within these “in-active” excipients where gluten is often found.
So, how does a patient or a pharmacist know if a medication has gluten in it or not?
Most pharmacists are not trained in these issues, so it is a good idea to ask first about their experience or knowledge on the matter.
To be 100% sure, it is best contact the manufacturer to see if the product is assayed for gluten and if they can verify that it is then gluten free. One would also want to verify that there is absolutely no potential for cross contamination from other drugs in the manufacturing process.
If a drug company is not able to answer this conclusively, than it might be prudent to look for other alternatives.

Alternatives include medications which are guaranteed to be free of gluten and if such medications are not available, it could be of great benefit to contact a compounding pharmacy. This is a pharmacy which specializes in the customization of medications, and can create a prescription under the order of a physician which is free of such impurities and allergenic ingredients.
Navigating through this gluten filled world can often be a challenge to the Celiac patient, although arming yourself with knowledge as well as the support from qualified health care participants can make it much easier.

Press Release: Waking Up Between 2 AM and 4 AM? Pharmacist Says It Could Be This Hormone

Chances are either you or someone that you know has trouble sleeping. In fact, a study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation asked over 1000 adult men and women about their sleeping habits. Approximately 50% of women and 45% of men mentioned that they have difficulty sleeping. Is this just a natural process of growing old, or could it be a symptom of an over-committed, over-stressed culture?

“One of the biggest complaints I hear is from females who constantly wake-up the same time each night, interestingly enough between 2 AM and 4 AM”, explains Robert Kress, pharmacist and nutritionist of www.longevityleague.com “And I don’t find it to be a coincidence, I believe it is more of a cultural phenomena pointing to stress in our culture and not properly managing it; As a result and our hormones become overworked, and often depleted.”

The practice of hormones, especially bio-identical hormones has received increased attention over the past decade; with baby boomers wanting to age healthy, as well as famous people in the news such as Suzanne Somers and Oprah promoting, writing books and dedicating full shows on the topic.

“And what we often hear is about estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, although it is very important to focus on cortisol, which often get’s left out”, Kress continues.

Kress went on to highlight the importance of cortisol, and how critical it is to test and recognize cortisol as it relates to the balance of peoples hormones. Cortisol is a hormone released from the adrenal glands which allows us to respond and adapt to stress in a healthy manner. We are designed to deal with stress accompanied by intermittent periods of rest and renewal. The problem is that people often do not provide themselves time for the renewal and the adrenal glands, cortisol and even other hormones become depleted.

How can we tell where our cortisol levels are? Robert Kress as well as many other integrative practitioners recommend cortisol salivary tests. By simply collecting saliva into a vial, one can find out very accurate readings of their cortisol levels, and most importantly, can easily check their levels 4 times throughout the day in the comfort of their own home.

“Checking throughout the day is very important because our cortisol levels can alter dramatically from morning to evening. If you were to get a simple blood draw, it is usually only one time in a day, thus missing very big pieces to the puzzle. Cortisol levels should be higher in the morning and gradually decrease as the day goes on, thus leading us into a healthy rest. We often see just the opposite, cortisol levels rising toward the evening or even spiking at certain time, which can be a major reason for people’s difficulty sleeping, or even waking them up at certain times of the night.”

Kress recommends contacting a practitioner who specializes in the practice of natural hormones. And contrary to many people’s beliefs, he says many endocrinologists are not fully versed in the optimal balance, unless they have sought out additional training on the matter. Conventional medical and pharmacy school training often does not adequately address assessment and balance of hormones.

To find out more about natural hormones, nutrition, resources to find the best practitioners, saliva testing, and more, Kress recommends an Apple iphone and iPad application, iHormones which can be found in the Apple app store.

The Truth Behind The Prempro Debacle

You will probably here in the news if you have not already that the drug company Wyeth, maker of Prempro® hormone therapy, has paid ghostwriters to play up the benefits and downplay the harm of the drug in articles published in medical journals.

Researchers from Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington and fellow colleagues have analyzed dozens of ghostwritten reviews and commentaries.

It turns out that Wyeth, now owned by Pfizer, paid a medical communication company, Design Write $25,000 to ghostwrite articles on clinical studies. The researchers also noted that Design Write was also assigned to write 20 review articles about the drug at $20,000 each.

Researchers went on to say that the company was expected to promote unauthorized use of the drug to prevent dementia, Parkinson’s disease, vision troubles and even wrinkles.

One particular statement in the article from Reuters said, “The team said the articles where intended to mitigate concerns that hormone replacement therapy raises the risk of breast cancer, and to support the unfounded idea that the drugs offer some protections against heart disease.”
Now this statement can be misleading, so let us help to clear the confusion. It groups all hormonal therapy into one category, which we feel needs to be further defined.

Optimal hormonal therapy, in my humbled option consists of customized approaches of nutrition and hormonal therapy, what is known as bio-identical hormonal therapy to the individuals needs, based off of testing and symptom management by their physician. This should not be confused with the utilization of Prempro® and other non-bio-identical treatment regimens.

Prempro® is considered to be hormone replacement therapy, although it does not consist of hormones that are bio-identical to the human body. Prempro® is a combination of conjugated horse estrogens obtained from horse urine as well as medroxyprogesterone which should not be confused with bio-identical human progesterone.

Much of this hormone debate began when the government sponsored Women’s Health Initiative Program halted its study using Prempro®, estrogen alone and progestin alone, back on July 9, 2002; which was 3 years early due to an increased risk of breast cancer in women taking these hormones.

Other findings were as follows:
• The stroke rate was 41% higher in women taking Prempro®
• Women on Prempro® had double the rate of blood clots
• Women on Prempro® had a 22% increase in heart disease
• Women on Prempro® had a 26% increase in breast cancer

In no way is this letter intended to implicate Prempro®, but to educate and open the conversation with our customers about concerns, options, and solutions to their health and hormonal needs.

Where there is a considerable amount of research on the benefits of bio-identical hormones, we do not find it prudent to make a blanket statement calling them safe.
It is our belief that with the wisdom of nature and science, looking at the body as a whole with proper assessment, treatments is the best option taking into account the individuality of the patient.

Franken Food Alert

The US FDA just cleared the way for genetically modified salmon to be created.
These fish will grow at twice the rate of a normal salmon, and as the FDA cited, “we do not believe they will cause significant harm to the environment.”
One does not have to read between the lines too much.
Significant?  What about human harm?
The good thing is, they will be farm raised, so all one has to do is ask, “is the fish wild or farm raised.”
If they say farm raised, or they don’t know – don’t order it, chances are it definitely is farm raised.
We already know that farm raised fish is an unhealthier fish, and they often add dye to the water just to give it a “natural looking color.”
As far as GMO, we have no idea what that can do to our health.  In my humble opinion it is not a thoroughly tested science, by land or by sea.

Why The Skin Care Industry Does Not Want You To Know About Paraben Free Skin Care Products

There is little question why wrinkle creams, skin serums and a myriad of other products are catapulting the anti-aging skincare industry ahead of the rest of the skincare market. People want to look and feel their best, and many of these products can offer just that.
What I would like to do is speak to you today about one very important tip that can help you find the highest quality products; products that are based around the highest in quality, safety and effectiveness.
You must know that much of the industry does not want you know about paraben free skincare, let me tell you why.
You see, the big players in almost every industry have gotten there by selling more and spending less; which is a great business model, but rest assured does not always create the most safe and effective products. And this goes for the anti-aging skincare business.
One of the most pervasive assaults against our quest for health and beauty are toxic tagalongs like preservatives such as the paraben family of chemicals. Parabens are used as preservatives in many thousands of cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical products which our population is constantly exposed to. Finding paraben free skincare products can dramatically decrease ones exposure to these chemicals.
There are 4 main parabens; butylparaben, methylparaben, ethylparaben and propylparaben. On the label these would be listed as 'in-active' ingredients, setting them apart from the active ingredients such as anti-oxidants, exfoliates, moisturizers and cleansers. The problem is that science has proven that these in-actives, really are not that in-active.
The Paraben family of preservatives has proven to be hormone mimickers. What this means is that due to their shape and structure, as well as an affinity they have towards our body's natural hormone receptors; they can either compete for a receptor site, knocking off a biological hormone which is meant be there, or worse yet exert some sort of unnatural stimulation upon the receptor.
Implications of paraben exposure and such hormone mimicking activity has resulted in; parabens being discovered in cancer breast tumors, disruption of hormonal secretions such as testosterone and decreased sperm production, as well as shown to be responsible for numerous cases of allergic responses of the skin.
It's true; we do live in a toxic environment. One of the best things you can do for your health and your skin is to eliminate as many toxic tagalongs as possible. In my skincare coaching services I recommend searching for safe and effective age defying paraben free skincare products.
And trust me; your skin will love you for feeding it highly effective, high quality wrinkle creams and skin serums, I promise that this decision for your beauty and your health will pay you back over and over again.
Do your research, read the ingredients, and make the decision that is best for your beauty, your youth and your health.

Kitchen Kindness For The Prostate

Did you know that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men, killing more than 32,000 Americans every year.

Since September is Prostate cancer awareness month, I thought it would be prudent to share with you some healthy prostate tips from the kitchen.

There is a lot of research on foods that can support a healthy prostate, improving ones odds of avoiding the disease with generous helpings of the following edibles - and the avoidance of one very dangerous sweetener.

1. Eat your Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts.

Crucifereous vegetables have proven in numerous studies to support a healthy prostate.  Cruciferous vegetables include: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale and others.

Cruciferous vegetables have been identified to contain two powerful phytochemicals, isothiocyanates and glucosinolates which are believed to neutralize cancer-causing substances.

They also contain indole-3-carbinol which has shown effective in producing a healthy metabolism of both male and female hormones.

2. No Ketchup....Yes Tomatoes!

Tomatoes are a rich source of a powerful anti-oxidant, lycopene.  Researchers out of Harvard University found after studying over 40,000 subjects that those who ate the most tomato based foods decreased their risk of prostate cancer by 35 percent.

And Ketchup does not count...most ketchup bought in the stores has very little nutritional value and is full of sugar.

3. Drink or take your Green Tea

Researchers out of Parma Italy found that men who took three 200 mg capsules of green tea daily for one year, reduced their risk of developing cancer by 90 percent compared to those taking a placebo.  An important take home is that a concentrated capsule contains a lot more active ingredients, that drinking tea alone.

And for you tea drinkers - research has also found that by adding lemon and lime to your tea can increase its anti-oxidant ability, although adding milk can plummet it by over 25 percent.

4. Eat Fish

A study in the publication, Clinical Cancer Research found that men who eat one or two servings of fatty fish each week have a 63 percent lower risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer.  Fatty fish have high levels of omega 3 fatty acids which researchers believe fight inflammation.

If choosing to eat your fish, avoid farm raised and look for cold water fish to reduce the exposure to toxins such as heavy metals.  If choosing to supplement thorugh capsules or oil, make sure you are purchasing a high quality, stabilized, toxin free fish oil supplement.

5. Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are high in the mineral selenium, and research has identified that men with prostate cancer have much lower levels of selenium.  In addition individuals with high blood levels of selenium had a four to fivefold decrease in the odds of developing prostate cancer.

Important to note: More is not always better...if supplementing do not exceed 400 mcg to 600 mcg without speaking to your health care practitioner.

6. Allium Containing Foods

Allium containing foods include vegetables such as garlic, onions, scallions, leeks and chives.  Research has shown that regular consumption of these foods reduced risk of prostate cancer by 50 percent.

Here is the kicker, especially if you are a fan of chives.  Men who ate the highest amounts of scallions reduced their risk by 70 percent.

And the Nasty Ingredient to Avoid....FRUCTOSE

A recent study out of the University of California Los Angeles found that when tumor cells were fed wither glucose or fructose, that the tumor cells reacted differently.  Where tumor cells tend to thrive on all sugars, fructose actually cause the tumor cells to proliferate (grow and conquer)

....So contrary what The Corn Refiners Association and the American Beverage Association want to tell you in their commercials, fructose does act differently in the body compared to other natural sugars.

For those of you looking for the edge up...added supplementation to help promote a healthy prostate, we recommend
