Since September is Prostate cancer awareness month, I thought it would be prudent to share with you some healthy prostate tips from the kitchen.
There is a lot of research on foods that can support a healthy prostate, improving ones odds of avoiding the disease with generous helpings of the following edibles - and the avoidance of one very dangerous sweetener.
1. Eat your Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts.
Crucifereous vegetables have proven in numerous studies to support a healthy prostate. Cruciferous vegetables include: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale and others.
Cruciferous vegetables have been identified to contain two powerful phytochemicals, isothiocyanates and glucosinolates which are believed to neutralize cancer-causing substances.
They also contain indole-3-carbinol which has shown effective in producing a healthy metabolism of both male and female hormones.
2. No Ketchup....Yes Tomatoes!
Tomatoes are a rich source of a powerful anti-oxidant, lycopene. Researchers out of Harvard University found after studying over 40,000 subjects that those who ate the most tomato based foods decreased their risk of prostate cancer by 35 percent.
And Ketchup does not count...most ketchup bought in the stores has very little nutritional value and is full of sugar.
3. Drink or take your Green Tea
Researchers out of Parma Italy found that men who took three 200 mg capsules of green tea daily for one year, reduced their risk of developing cancer by 90 percent compared to those taking a placebo. An important take home is that a concentrated capsule contains a lot more active ingredients, that drinking tea alone.
And for you tea drinkers - research has also found that by adding lemon and lime to your tea can increase its anti-oxidant ability, although adding milk can plummet it by over 25 percent.
4. Eat Fish
A study in the publication, Clinical Cancer Research found that men who eat one or two servings of fatty fish each week have a 63 percent lower risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer. Fatty fish have high levels of omega 3 fatty acids which researchers believe fight inflammation.
If choosing to eat your fish, avoid farm raised and look for cold water fish to reduce the exposure to toxins such as heavy metals. If choosing to supplement thorugh capsules or oil, make sure you are purchasing a high quality, stabilized, toxin free fish oil supplement.
5. Brazil Nuts
Brazil nuts are high in the mineral selenium, and research has identified that men with prostate cancer have much lower levels of selenium. In addition individuals with high blood levels of selenium had a four to fivefold decrease in the odds of developing prostate cancer.
Important to note: More is not always better...if supplementing do not exceed 400 mcg to 600 mcg without speaking to your health care practitioner.
6. Allium Containing Foods
Allium containing foods include vegetables such as garlic, onions, scallions, leeks and chives. Research has shown that regular consumption of these foods reduced risk of prostate cancer by 50 percent.
Here is the kicker, especially if you are a fan of chives. Men who ate the highest amounts of scallions reduced their risk by 70 percent.
And the Nasty Ingredient to Avoid....FRUCTOSE
A recent study out of the University of California Los Angeles found that when tumor cells were fed wither glucose or fructose, that the tumor cells reacted differently. Where tumor cells tend to thrive on all sugars, fructose actually cause the tumor cells to proliferate (grow and conquer)
....So contrary what The Corn Refiners Association and the American Beverage Association want to tell you in their commercials, fructose does act differently in the body compared to other natural sugars.
