Drug Induced Nutrient Depletions: The Ignored Responsiblity of the Medical System

Nutritional soundness is a key factor to a healthy, disease free life. Nutritional deficiencies can play a role in every disease.
Many nutritional deficiencies go unnoticed influencing issues such as :
  • PMS
  • Depression and Mood Imbalances
  • ADD and ADHD
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Insomnia
  • Energy Disorders, Weakness and Fatigue
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid Disorder’s
  • And more
When the body is depleted of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids, it weakens, making it susceptible to a whole host of diseases, malfunctions and overall loss of well being.
In fact, researchers in the Journal of the American Medical Association stated,

“Sub-optimal vitamin states are associated with many chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. It is important for physician’s to identify patients with poor nutrition or other reasons for increased vitamin needs.”

The Journal continues,

“Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone…it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements.”
And contrary to what many believe, avoiding nutritional deficiencies is not just about eating a healthy diet.
There are four main causes to nutritional deficiencies and imbalances:
1. Diet
2. Aging
3. Lifestyle
4. Prescription Medications

Drug Induced Nutrient Depletion's

The problem of drug induced nutrient depletion's is probably much larger and widespread than we actually know.

Studies documenting over 1000 prescription and non-prescription drugs causing depletion's of one or more nutrients have been appearing in scientific literature for decades.

The fact remains that there are still countless studies that have not been performed on drug’s effect on various nutrients, and probably will not be done due to lack of funding for such studies.
Where it is not suggested that drug induced nutrient depletion's are the primary source of peoples disease states, if such nutritional depletion's are allowed to occur without providing proper nutritional balance, than this could provide a very strong influence towards such disease states.

It is critical for both health care practitioners and patients in need of taking such medications to arm themselves with the awareness and knowledge of medication side-effects and interactions, but also of the nutritional depletion's which they can cause.

Here is a very powerful example of how at just a few cents a day, vitamin therapy can reverse a very dangerous risk factor.
Vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid are commonly depleted by heart and diabetes medications, oral contraceptives, and more.
Homocysteine is a very important health marker that when elevated can be a dangerous cardiovascular risk and has been linked to accelerated brain shrinkage.
Just by taking Vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid can lower homocysteine levels and may be one of the most effective ways to decrease this risk of cardiovascular disease and other age related issues of health.

...And the greatest resource I have found is a book written by two of my former teachers, Jim Lavalle RPh, CCN, DND, and Ross Pelton, RPh CCN, The Nutritional Cost of Drugs

It truly is a book I feel everyone should own, the problem is, from what I understand it is out of print, and if you do a search on Amazon, people are selling it for $150 each and above.

Fortunately, I have about 15 or 20 copies left over from my store, so, I guess it's kind of a first come, first serve, I am selling the for only $35.00 each.
