Vitamin D and Lung Cancer

It hardly seems a week can go by without new research coming out on the benefits of vitamin D.
New research out of the Loyal Universty Health System is showing how Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a significant increase in lung transplant rejection.

In every lung transplant case (as well as other transplant surgeries) there is a significant chance that the body will reject the organ.  Researchers believe that Vitamin D plays a very big role in supporting the immune system to allow the body to accept the organ.

In the study, 122 patients were evaluated beginning with Vitamin D levels after the surgery.  Vitamin D deficiency was associated with a significant increase in rejection for 51.7 percent of the patients during the first year following the transplant. In addition, Vitamin D deficiency also showed a trend toward increased airway inflammation in 16.7 percent of the patients.
